Anthony Santander hit a two-run double to spark Baltimore’s three-run first inning, Spenser Watkins and four relievers scattered six hits and the Orioles extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 7-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. It’s the Orioles’ longest winning streak in a single season since they won 13 in a row from Sept. 7-22, 1999. With the victory, the Orioles (45-44) also went over the .500 mark for the first time since April 8, 2021, when they were 4-3. The Cubs lost their sixth consecutive game, their longest skid since dropping 10 straight games June 4-16.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jesse Winker hit his second solo homer of the day and the Seattle Mariners won their 10th straight game, edging the Washington Nationals 2-1 on Wednesday night to sweep a doubleheader.

NEW YORK (AP) — DJ LeMahieu capped his 34th birthday by sliding across the plate on Alexis Díaz's second straight wild pitch in the 10th inning, and the New York Yankees rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 Wednesday night and stop a three-game losing streak.

MIAMI (AP) — Jesús Aguilar hit a tying single and scored the winning run on a wild pitch as the Miami Marlins rallied for three runs in the 10th inning to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 on Wednesday night.

Lucas Giolito pitched one-run ball into the seventh inning and the Chicago White Sox beat Cleveland 2-1 after Guardians’ starter Aaron Civale exited after one inning because of a sore right wrist. Giolito yielded an unearned run in 6 1/3 innings and extended his dominance of Cleveland hitters. The right-hander is 5-1 with a 0.83 ERA in 10 starts against Cleveland since May 17, 2019. Giolito’s strong outing, along with RBIs by José Abreu and Andrew Vaughn, helped the White Sox earn a split of the four-game series between teams battling for second place in the AL Central Division. Civale allowed two hits and threw 20 pitches in the scoreless first. His injury forced manager Terry Francona to use five relievers, one day after the teams played a doubleheader.

Jhon Durán scored two goals early and the Chicago Fire cruised to a 2-0 victory over Toronto FC. Durán scored in the 4th minute and notched a brace in the 16th with his third goal of the season for Chicago (7-10-5). Gaga Slonina made two saves to earn a clean sheet for the Fire. Quentin Westberg had four saves for Toronto (5-12-4).

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Shane McClanahan earned his 10th win and regained the major league lead in strikeouts during his final outing before the All-Star Game, pitching the Tampa Bay Rays past the Boston Red Sox 4-1 on Wednesday night.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jon Gray allowed only a fourth-inning infield single in seven shutout innings, Leody Taveras and Brad Miller hit two-run singles during a five-run first inning, and the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics 5-2 on Wednesday night.

They’re going to try to play college basketball on an aircraft carrier again. Coach Tom Izzo and Michigan State will get a return trip to San Diego Bay to face Gonzaga on the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln on Veteran’s Day. The game will be shown in prime time on Nov. 11 as part of ESPN’s Armed Forces Classic from the flat top moored at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, across the bay from downtown San Diego. The Abraham Lincoln is on deployment and is due back in port later in the summer.

Sandro Mamukelashvili had 18 points and 15 rebounds and the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 87-75 on Wednesday at the Las Vegas Summer League. Mamukelashvili also had four of Milwaukee’s 25 assists on 30 field goals. MarJon Beauchamp made four of Milwaukee’s 15 3-pointers and finished with 15 points. Rayjon Tucker, Lindell Wigginton and Zylan Cheatham each scored 14 points. Milwaukee led 65-63 after three quarters before opening the fourth on a 11-2 run to take control. Minnesota didn’t make its first field goal of the fourth quarter until the 5:17 mark. Kevon Harris scored 16 points for Minnesota.

Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam was back on top of an LPGA Tour leaderboard Wednesday, teaming with Madelene Sagstrom in the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational. Sorenstam and Sagstrom shot a 5-under 65 in alternate-shot play at Midland Country Club for a share of the first-round lead with fellow late starters Pauline Roussin and Dewi Weber. Sorenstam and Sagstrom, played alongside Lexi Thompson and Brittany Altomare, with the Americans shooting 71 in the round delayed 2 hours, 40 minutes because of morning rain. The 51-year-old Sorenstam is making her second LPGA Tour start of the season and only her third since retiring after the 2008 season. She missed the cut in the U.S. Women’s Open last month.

Brady Singer won for the first time in over a month as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2. The Royals earned their first winning homestand since July last year. Singer allowed 12 baserunners and repeatedly pitched out of trouble for his first victory since June 8. Andrew Benintendi collected his tenth multi-hit game out of his last 16 starts as he prepares for his first All-Star Game. Kansas City batted around in the fourth against Tarik Skubal, who has lost six of his last seven starts. Scott Barlow finished with his 15th save.

N’Keal Harry is getting the new beginning to his NFL career that he was looking for a year ago. The Patriots traded the 2019 first-round pick to Chicago for a seventh-round pick in 2024. It ends a tenure in New England that never really got going after Harry missed half his rookie season with an ankle injury. Coach Bill Belichick hoped the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Arizona State product would provide the Patriots with a playmaker with an ability to stretch the field. Instead, Harry managed just 57 catches for 598 yards and four touchdowns over three seasons.

A defendant in a Mississippi welfare fraud case says she directed $1.1 million in welfare money to former NFL star Brett Favre at the direction of former Gov. Phil Bryant. Mississippi news outlets report that the accusation, which Bryant denies, is in a filing on behalf of defendant Nancy New. New has pleaded guilty to criminal charges. Her court filing is in a civil case filed by the Mississippi Department of Human Services. Bryant issued a statement denying the accusation. Favre has repaid the money and has said he didn't know it had come from welfare funds. Favre has not been charged with criminal wrongdoing.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals will be without 10 of the 26 players on their active roster for their upcoming trip to Toronto due to Canadian restrictions on travelers who aren't vaccinated against COVID-19.

The Toronto Blue Jays have fired manager Charlie Montoyo and promoted bench coach John Schneider to interim manager for the remainder of the season. Triple-A manager Casey Candaele was named interim bench coach. The 13th manager in Blue Jays history, and the first from Puerto Rico, Montoyo went 236-236 in parts of four seasons. Toronto beat Philadelphia Tuesday to snap a four-game losing streak. The Blue Jays are 3-9 in July. They went 1-6 on a road trip against Oakland, which has the worst record in the majors, and Seattle that ended Sunday with a four-game sweep against the Mariners.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Oklahoma will still get to play its Red River rivalry game against Texas when the two teams go to the Southeastern Conference together, but there may be no more Bedlam for the Sooners against Oklahoma State.

Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman just kick-started the franchise’s rebuild. Yzerman made bold moves when free agency opened Wednesday, generating a jolt of excitement for the once-proud franchise that it has not had since the former team captain was hired three-plus years ago. The Hockey Hall of Famer signed center Andrew Copp to a $28.1 million, five-year contract soon after the market opened. Yzerman also signed defenseman Ben Chiarot to a $19 million, four-year contract and a pair of wings to two-year deals. David Perron signed for $9.5 million and Dominik Kubalik for $5 million.

Jose Miranda hit a game-ending, three-run homer against Milwaukee’s Josh Hader as the Minnesota Twins finally got a timely hit to beat the Brewers 4-1. Miranda’s third hit of the game traveled to the second deck in left field. Hader walked Jorge Polanco and allowed a single to Max Kepler before Miranda’s walk-off. Jhoan Duran earned the first win of his career with one inning in relief, allowing one hit and a walk. Minnesota was 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base.
