The plunge in prices for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies provides a cautionary tale for the handful of public pension funds that have dipped their toes into the crypto pool. Most have done it indirectly through stocks or investment funds that serve as proxies for the larger crypto market, though a pension fund for Houston firefighters last year directly bought bitcoin and other digital currency. A lack of transparency makes it difficult to tell whether they’ve made or lost money. Not only are pension funds exposed to risks in the crypto world, so are taxpayers who potentially could have to bail them out.
A judge has dismissed charges against a Wisconsin man accused of hiding the corpse of a man he was convicted of killing in the early 1980s. John Andrews, of Chilton, pleaded guilty in 1994 to homicide by negligent use of a motor vehicle in the death of 67-year-old Starkie Swenson, who went missing in 1983. Swenson’s body was found last September by two people hiking in High Cliff State Park. Since Andrews failed to disclose to police in a June 2021 interview where the remains were, prosecutors charged him with hiding a corpse. However, Judge Carey Reed said Wednesday that the statue requires that someone hid a corpse in order to evade prosecution or to gain benefits. Those terms are not met in this case.
Republican Tim Michels, who has the endorsement of Donald Trump, is running for Wisconsin governor as a political outsider. But records released Wednesday by the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign show he has been a big giver to powerful Republicans and candidates for the past 12 years. His top GOP rival in the race, former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, isn’t far behind. The winner of the Aug. 9 primary will advance to face Democratic Gov. Tony Evers. Michels and his wife, Barb, gave $207,650 to Republican and conservative candidates between 2010 and 2022. Kleefisch, her husband, her campaign committee and her political action committee gave $130,000 to candidates over the same time.

The Republican candidate for governor in Wisconsin endorsed by Donald Trump won’t rule out attempting to decertify President Joe Biden’s 2020 win in the state, even though GOP legislative leaders and attorneys from both sides have dismissed the idea as impossible and unconstitutional. Tim Michels told WKOW-TV on Tuesday that he would “need to see the details” when asked if he would sign a bill to decertify the election. Michels’ refusal to rule out the idea came days after Trump renewed his call for decertification following a Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling that absentee ballot drop boxes are illegal.
A federal judge is siding with the Sun Prairie School District in a lawsuit filed by two Black parents who objected to their children’s middle school assignment that asked students how they would punish a slave in ancient Mesopotamia. Dazrrea Ervins and Priscilla Jones claimed the assignment in February 2021 violated their civil rights as well as those of their children. The question was not part of the school district’s curriculum on ancient Mesopotamia. Three teachers came up with the assignment on their own. U.S. District Judge James Peterson says the parents failed to show evidence that their civil rights or those of their children were violated by the assignment.
A Wisconsin doctor has purchased two clinical buildings in northern Illinois where he plans to offer abortion pills as early as this week at one location and surgical abortions within six months at the other site. The move comes after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned federal abortion rights last month. That led abortion providers in Wisconsin to stop the procedures while the courts determine whether the state’s 1849 law banning most abortions stands. Abortion remains legal in Illinois. Dr. Dennis Christensen, of Madison, says he is part of a group trying to revive abortion services in Rockford, Illinois, in part to accommodate women from Wisconsin.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Tim Michels once led an organization that fought a proposal to get tough on people who were in the country illegally, but he’s campaigning as someone opposed to illegal immigration. Michels is in a tight battle with former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch in the Republican primary race for governor. The winner will face Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in November. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Tuesday on Michels’ positions on immigration. When Michels was president of the board of the Wisconsin Transportation Builders Association during the 2007-2008 legislative session, the group’s lobbyists opposed an Assembly bill that would have prevented companies that employ “illegal aliens” from getting government contracts, tax exemptions and loans.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers is reporting raising more than $10 million over the first six months of this year as the Democrat prepares to face a tough reelection bid in the battleground state in November. The campaign for Wisconsin governor is shaping up to be the most expensive in state history. Outside groups are pouring millions into the race and Republicans vying to win the Aug. 9 primary are also spending furiously. The top Republican candidates, construction company co-owner Tim Michels and former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, have until Friday to report their fundraising totals. Evers' campaign on Tuesday reported raising more than $20 million since 2021 and having $7.6 million cash on hand.

Police in West Milwaukee say an officer was grazed by a bullet after another officer fired his gun at an armed suspect. Authorities say officers responded to a residence about 11:30 p.m. Monday after a male caller told dispatchers he felt he was about to die, gave his address and hung up. Police say the man came out of his home and pointed a gun at an officer, who fired a round, but missed the suspect. A fragment from that bullet his the second officer, causing minor injuries. Officers used a stun gun on the man and arrested him. Officials say a firearm was recovered.

One week after a shooting at a Fourth of July parade that left seven dead, the Chicago suburb of Highland Park held a moment of silence Monday morning to mark the exact time police say the first shot was fired. More than 100 people gathered and hugged each other in a downtown plaza for a tribute that began at 10:14 a.m. and lasted longer than the planned two minutes. Churches in the community along Lake Michigan tolled their bells seven times. The event was held not far from the building where a gunman fired dozens of shots from the roof along the parade route. A huge memorial of flowers and chairs holding photographs of the seven victims is now there.
A judge has declared many of Minnesota’s restrictions on abortion unconstitutional, including the state’s mandatory 24-hour waiting period and a requirement that both parents be notified before a minor can get an abortion. Ramsey County Judge Thomas Gilligan on Monday also struck down Minnesota’s requirements that only physicians can perform abortions, and that abortions after the first trimester must be performed in hospitals. Gilligan issued the ruling in a lawsuit from abortion rights groups that argued the restrictions were unconstitutional under a landmark 1995 Minnesota Supreme Court ruling. Opponents of abortion rights are calling on Democratic Attorney General Keith Ellison to appeal.
Northwestern University's president-elect is stepping down from the post after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. The school in Evanston, Illinois, said Monday that Rebecca Blank and her husband will return to Wisconsin, where she will undergo treatment. Blank was chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, for eight years before she was named at Northwestern's 17th president and first female president last fall. In a statement, Blank expressed her disappointment about having to step down from a position at the university where she was once on the faculty. The school says Morton Schapiro will remain as president until a successor is named.
A key Republican leader in the state Assembly has decided to resign early rather than wait until his term ends. Majority Leader Jim Steineke announced in January he wouldn't seek re-election. He announced Monday that he will resign on July 27 rather than serve out the remainder of his term. He said the Legislature's two-year session ended in March and lawmakers aren't coming back to do anything before the new session starts in January so he has decided to enter the private sector now. Republican Reps. Mike Kuglitsch and Tyler Vorpagel also have resigned early after announcing they won't seek reelection.
The parents of a Green Bay toddler who died after ingesting fentanyl have been charged with child neglect resulting in death. According to a criminal complaint, the father of the 18-month-old child told police that he, the toddler’s mother and the boy laid down for a nap on May 3 and when he woke up he found the child wasn’t breathing. An autopsy showed the “presence of illicit fentanyl in the decedent’s system is a contributing factor to the cause of death.” Tyana Putzlocker is being held on $10,000 cash bond. Derrick Young’s bond has been set at $25,000 cash. Court records do not list an attorney for either defendant.

Two people were shot and killed following a disturbance at a Milwaukee grocery store. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office says the shootings took place Saturday morning at the El Rey on Cesar Chavez Drive. It’s one of three Milwaukee locations for the Hispanic grocery store. Police say the ruckus spilled into the parking lot where a man and two security guards exchanged gunfire. The man and one of the security guards were killed. Milwaukee police reported a separate homicide that happened earlier Saturday, resulting in the death of a 30-year-old man. The three homicides follow two killings in Milwaukee Friday night when a 66-year-old woman and 50-year-old man died in separate shootings within 30 minutes of each other.
